ROGUE LOCKPICKING GUIDE
LAST UPDATE: 2/12/01

GM Revel says (in message board posts on October 15, 2000):

An explaination of what the new locks system will be. I'm not exactly good at explaining things so this might not all make sense until you see the new system work, but its for those who want a little more information.

To start off there will be 5 different types of locks and each of these types will have a type of lockpick to go with it. Unless I'm told to call them something different the names of the types are mochlos, syrtis, diskos, egkopi and trochos.

Now each of those types will have 5 of what I am calling gauges. On the lockpicks the gauges are ultralight, light, medium, heavy, and ultraheavy. On the boxes the lock gauges could be called anything depending on the lock. The 5 I'm starting off with will have delicate, fragile, sturdy, durable and strong lock gauges.

What the picker will want to do is match the type of lock with the type of lockpick, and then match the gauge of the lock with the gauge of the lockpick. You'll be able to attempt to pick with any of the types and gauges, but matching them up gives you the best chance to open the box.

Everyone will get what I am calling a learning bonus. You don't get to see it, but it is there. As you keep attempting to pick the lock, you might not pick it open but you do learn a little from it and that learning accumulates until you finally figure out how to pick the lock. The unskilled person will be spending a lot of time, effort and probably more dinars to pick and disarm, but they'll be able to it.

Skill, however, is always more important. So, if you have the skill already the learning bonus won't be as important. So what do rogues get? A way to pick around the trap of the box possibly without having to deal with roundtime if they are skilled enough. They'll still be far better at picking and disarming than anyone else.

A bit on disarming now. Its changed a little, basically the same except for a few things. One noticeable thing is the use of disarming probes. The probes use a learning bonus the same way picking does. Rogues won't really need to use probes except for those really tough boxes. A rogue picking on level should be able to pick around the trap.

About the picksets: They are empty in the stores, you will need to fill them lockpicks. But the picksets are a one time buy. Only the lockpicks themselves wear out.

You canOPEN and CLOSE picksets. PUSH will toggle through all the gauges if the pickset is open.  To add a new lockpick you need to match the type and gauge. A light mochlos lockpick will only fit in a pickset if it is mochlos and set to the light slot. Then PUT LOCKPICK IN PICKSET. To remove a lockpick, set it to the gauge you want and PULL PICKSET.

UPDATE - 2/4/01: You can now open picksets to the lockpick you want by typing OPEN PICKSET <gauge>. You can also use UL and UH for
ultralight and ultraheavy to save some typing.  GM Revel

To find out information about a lockpick or what gauge the pickset is set to, MEASURE it. To see what lockpicks are inside, open your pickset and LOOK IN or EXAMINE it.

You can pick with the individual lockpicks or the picksets. You won't need to take the lockpicks out of the picksets to pick.

For the probes, you can MEASURE them to see their condition. To use a probe, USE PROBE ON <box>.
